Smokers only quit for themselves. They never quit for someone else. If he's still smoking, it's because he wants to, and because he doesn't want to feel bad even for a little while.
Even a practice quit is better than nothing, of course not everyone quits the first time.

This. I smoked for 15 years and just switched to an e-cig. I'm still a nicotine slave but at least I'm not flooding my body with tar and carcinogens. I'm going to get gradually lower doses of nicotine too.
