poor people don't have a job so they have nothing to do so they eat instead. also they tend to buy junk food because it's typically cheaper than quality stuff.

Most of them do in fact have a job but a lack of education or giving a shit means they are happy eating shit and over eating.

Capitalism and consumerist society.
It's always capitalism.
1. Cheap tasty food offsets the depression of being poor.
2. Food is the only luxury consumerist item the poor can afford.
They can't afford travel, new technology, new cars, new clothes, nor hobbies for them nor their children.
Food is the only lifestyle product that they can provide for themselves.
3. A parent in a poor lifestyle cannot afford to fill the needs of their children in this sick society.
So as a break from the constant complaining "I hate being poor; Everyone else has an iPhone!" they get to give them chocolate and fast food where they say "Thanks Mom! I love you!" or a partner says "Ooooh yum" instead of grumbling after work.
A healthy meal you don't get that feedback.
4. Healthy food that tastes good often requires purchase of a number of pans / utensils / spices / cupboard essentials.
Combined with the fact you are most likely going to be using a number of pans and kitchenware a family can't make that investment on a limited budget.
This makes cooking from fresh hard. Also fresh ingredients mean going to the shop more often that may be far away; also you have limited fridge space as you have a cheap shitty fridge.
5. The poor are deprived of the knowledge of how to cook and lack the skills to find out how. Because of a disgusting education system.
6. Because of these issues being generational their parents were under the same pressures and the behaviours are beaten into their brain from growing up.
Long story short. Capitalism.
