Topic: Why are tilt shift lenses so expensive?
+Triptych — 13.4 years ago #21,538

I could buy a camera for this much.

@OP
Why are you so poor?

Because my visa doesn't allow me to get a job in this country.

Pretty typical pricing for pro level glass.
Canon L are about half that if you use any canon bodies.

Or get a lensbaby Muse.
Edit added model name since lensbaby makes a whole shitload of cheap special effects lenses now.
(Edited 3 minutes later.)

I'm really just looking, I like film photography but it isn't at all practical. If I get a job this summer I bet I could buy a camera and a couple starter lenses!

Make a DIY shift tilt lens.
Also find a job where you get paid under the table. Ask friends/family if they had any odd jobs you might be able to help with or baby/dog/house-sit, etc. Anything where you get paid in cash and dont have to worry about taxes. If you have some skills put them to work for you. If you don't have any skills then theres always drugs and petty crimes.

When you look for a camera, look at canon digital rebel xti (or 10d, same thing, or love-love-happy-fun-camera or whatever the Japanese model name was... Kiss?) There are a ton out there, couple generations old so You can get one on ebay for under $200 with the starter lens. It's an ok lens. But canon lenses are easy to find, and some of the lower tier consumer grade plastic body lenses are amazing (50mm f/1.8, for example)

London, England. I've no idea where to start looking.
@260,054 (C)
Sweet Jesus that's cheap. £80, I have £50 from my birthday. There's a Nikon FM10 kit for £50, I fucking love that camera.
@260,051 (Antikhristos )
I'm hoping I'll be around for when people start painting walls, I bet I could join up with one.

I keep an xti around for a lot of stuff. Not the greatest for astronomy photography, so I have a Pentax MX for that. Old, completely mechanical so batteries aren't necessary, but good film is getting tough to find.
Might have to break down and buy a telescope with a ccd built in.

Nikkor lenses are expensive.
Not as expensive as ASML lenses. They're as close to ideal as you can get, f/0.55. F/0.5 is mathematically perfect. Photolithography lenses for semiconductors. There's like one little village in Germany where little old ladies make them.
$100k.
Someone managed a f/0.7 lense for photography. You can shoot pretty much by candlelight. DOF is really odd.
