Topic: Worst mobility scooter you've ever owned?

+Erik N 13.4 years ago #21,445

Thought I'd ask since I now own a mobility scooter that loves to play up... frequent motor cut outs and shit.

It is a Pride brand scooter.

Anyone else own a shitty mobility scooter?

I've been disabled from birth. It's only now I've been able to get mobile... my heartless bitch of a mother hates me being mobile.

This scooter was purchased privately... getting a scooter from the health system in oz is difficult as all hell

Erik we should talk more/privately. Maybe I could send you some products that would help your level of independence.

> Why doesnt she want you to get around? Are you on medicare or medicaid?

My mother believes she can get me to walk like a normal kid, but the way she goes about it is stupid... i can't even walk more than a few metres outside the house and she wants me to walk up to the garbage bin and back... impossible.
I'm not on medicare or medicaid or any of those programs. My mother also won't buy me a mobility scooter because 'its too expensive' which is bull. I can shop around and find a nice scooter for under $5k (which is the amount she ripped off from me in total Youth Allowance payments. Plus the fact she doesn't want me in a wheelchair... which is fucking stupid. She's obviously ashamed of me...

I'm fine with showering and dressing and things of that nature.

Yeah I have to push a walker around. not sure what disability is. had issues with walking since I was 3. No doctors know what is wrong with me. No one knows how to fix it. It got worse over time... now when i stand i get full body twitches...

I don't know they seem to handle it pretty well.
Even the basic ones have a simple form of suspension.
And you can get a decent suspension system on them.

I ain't no expert just a casual user.

@260,646 (kook !!u4KQvs2JM)

> But you can still use a walker? Has it been getting worse as you age?

Yes I still use a walker for short trips, and it is extremely worse now... if you've ever seen SWAT movies where they crouch as they shuffle around, thats what I do to walk now. 6mths to a year ago I could stand up, not any more.

@260,701 (kook !!u4KQvs2JM)

> They arent good with uneven terrain.

My scooter is much the same... it does not have ANY suspension at all, just a motor bolted onto a transaxle bolted onto the frame. it's great for indoor flat surfaces, but not on uneven sidewalks unless you throttle back. The battery contacts I have been considering replacing with single pole Anderson connectors for this very reason - bumpy sidewalks = frequent motor cut outs. Great little scooter otherwise...

@260,665 (kook !!u4KQvs2JM)

> Can I see your picture erik?

Sure. Let me black out my face in the photo and post it on imgur. It's an old photo. Be warned I am wearing a bomber jacket in the photo...

Doctors don't know what the hell is wrong with me. Done all the required tests. What causes my walking problems is still a mystery as far as they and me are concerned.

> Thank you. What are the wrist braces for? I'd like to see you walk sometime.

wrist braces are those used in skateboarding with the protective pad that if you fall avoids you skinning your wrist.
They help keep the rainproof pullover from admitting air to my body through the elastic arm openings on the pullover and making me shiver as a result (i'm very sensitive to temp differences).
