You can't do anything fun since they modernized everything. The old school guys spent as much time finding problems and sending repair crews out as they did creating huge chatrooms or listening in on White House communications.

Mostly started out with bored blind kids.

True but you can still have plenty of fun thanks to metasploit and by good ol' SE and phishing. A lot of the more fun stuff just takes a lot more work these days. :/

Phreaking wasn't really about that kind of thing, though. It really was just about the system being a playground. Even blue boxes, the most widely known boxes, were more about showing off to people who viewed technology was voodoo than free phone calls.
