Topic: Why in the modern era do the 'teachings' of fictional characters have so much say in the world?

I'm talking of course about religion. The ignoramus fools who use their pathetic religion as a way to oppose such things as gay marriage or abortion need to get with the times. They might as well be basing their arguments on what Voldemort or Darth Vader believe since it amounts to the same thing... the teachings from a fictional book by fictional characters.

Why don't the true intellectuals just ignore the religious fools and get on with things like allowing gay marriage and abortions without allowing the idiotic religious people getting in the way of logic with their make-believe fantasies?

I wish the religious right would get out of the way of scientific progress but that won't happen anytime soon. We can't have a republic or a democracy without their presence and paradigms like fascism/communism are infantile systems of government that rips out the soul of man along with stripping away his liberty.

The best thing we can do is try and educate people.
