Topic: Can England save the 3rd test against New Zealand?
+Anonymous A — 13.5 years ago #20,201
Only chance I can see that happening is if Broad and Anderson skittle out their middle order and tail for less than 100 and then Cook and co bat sensibly throughout the rest of today and all through tomorrow.

Does Ireland stand a chance against Sweden?

@OP
What language is that supposed to be?

New Zealand off to a decent start, 67 for 3, Fulton stroking some glorious drives through the on-side. Panesar too square to stop the last boundary. Pitch is flat and lifeless, offering nothing to the seamers. We'll see if Monty or even Trott can get some turn out of the footholes. Broad needs to pitch it fuller and stay away from leg, IMO.

Upgrade to rounders.

Nothing happening for Broad. Panesar about to come on.

Actually, looking at this wicket, if England can keep the NZ lead under 400 runs (currently they lead by 304), I can see them having a chance at this. The pitch is doing nothing, it's not breaking up at all. Should be a decent batting wicket all through tomorrow.

When he's up at Covint Gardin you can see 'im a standin' all alone, looking at this wicket. Instead won't join in a quiet little Tommy Dodd (half-pint of beer), drinking Scotch and Soda on 'is own,'E 'as the cheek and impidence to call 'is muvver 'is Ma. Since Jack Jones came into a little bit o' splosh, well 'e dunno where 'e are, and Panesar not a chance don't e know.

There's the break-through!!! Stunning catch by Bell. 84-4.

New Zealand declared. England set an impossible target of 480 to win. Surely now they can only block and hope to draw the game.

@OP
After the early wicket I thought there was going to be a collapse, but yeah they'll probably block their way to a draw

Last day under way. All seems to rest on Ian Bell's shoulders. I'll keep you guys updated. 118-4 right now.
·Anonymous A (OP) — 13.5 years ago, 28 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[T] [B] #246,389
Half-way through the morning session, drinks being taken. England 127-4. So far no real scares, Bell and Root blocking well.

Thanks. This is probably as clear as mud to our American friends (and a few British ones for that matter)

Now and again I'll give an update in the style of American televised sports:

Afternoon session under way. Really need Bell and Bairstow to bat through the next 2 hours at least. No stupid drives (that's how Cook and Finn threw their wickets away), just block.
·Anonymous A (OP) — 13.5 years ago, 8 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[T] [B] #246,438
Bairstow gone, caught at 1st slip, 159-6. England on their way down

Looks like NZ wins again!

Prior playing some shots. England almost certainly down and out, but at least they're going down fighting, something they haven't done during the previous 4 days of this game. Bell solid, reached his half century.
·Anonymous A (OP) — 13.5 years ago, 1 hour later, 1 day after the original post[T] [B] #246,471
Bell falls in the last over before tea for 73. 1 more session to go, England with just 3 wickets in hand (2 in actuality - we can forget about Panesar)
(Edited 3 minutes later.)
·Anonymous A (OP) — 13.5 years ago, 2 hours later, 1 day after the original post[T] [B] #246,519
Unbelievably, it looks like England are going to do this. 8 overs to go, 300-7, Matt Prior just got his century, Broad holding firm. Incredible game. Any yank who doesn't understand how a game can take 5 days to play, end in a draw, and be considered great sporting drama needs to watch a repeat of this game, all 45 hours of it.
·Anonymous A (OP) — 13.5 years ago, 51 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[T] [B] #246,538
Amazing. Absolutely amazing. England have done it.
