Topic: Can't afford independant adult life - options?
+A. Nonny-Moose — 13.5 years ago #20,038
Title about says it all. I simply cannot afford life.
I'm a College graduate with no money and no way to get any. My girlfriend just broke up with me because I get uber-depressed when I lose one of the short-term, part-time jobs (wtf? am I supposed to celebrate?), and is tired of being chauffeured places by one of our parents. I'm reduced to begging for min-wage slave jobs that don't even afford me enough to move out of my parent's basement, which in this economy is like being a goldfish trying to get food in a tank with sharks and pirahnas for competition.
I didn't join the army in high school because I had no Captain America delusions about what that meant - becoming a state-sanctioned killer to be shipped off to some Godforsaken dirthole and lose friends, limbs, my life, or all three in that order. Apparently I should've.
The homeless shelters are almost certainly packed with families, and single white guys are at the bottom of the totem pole for welfare in the first place.
Hell I can't even go west and be a dirt farmer - the land is all taken!
Anybody have some HELPFUL advice?

What is your degree in?

Associate in Applied Science - Computer Electronics.
And no student debt thanks to "discount knowledge at community college"; I simply refused to go that route with a depression incoming.
Though I'm hoping my degree isn't being laughed at by prospective employers.

Heh. My mother used to call silly degrees "underwater basketweaving" - and the way she said it was hilarious.
I suppose in retrospect I should've seen every computer job being outsourced to Asian peasants. But I just couldn't bring myself to give up what I'd been doing (repairing and working with computers) since I bought a used 486 from my dad for $10. Ah, the days of command line...

@244,304 (A. Nonny-Moose )
I think that was smart of you. I know a couple where one person went to one of the highest respected and one of the hardest schools to get into in the state and graduated with a Computer Science degree, and the other went to a small tech school and is graduating with an Associates in Computer Science. The one that goes to the small tech school already has a job lined up to make more money than his boyfriend (yes, gay) made when he first graduated. Don't give up hope! Keep looking no matter what. You've only lost when you've quit.
