Why do people think Aleister Crowley is so intuitive/badass for coming up with a philosophy I discovered as an angsty and rebellious 12 year-old boy?

@OP

Now are you saying you found Thelema at 12 or that you created a similar philosophy at that age?

If the latter then he just beat you to it by like 100 years is all. Although we have Francois Rabelais to thank for our major slogan. I would also hasten to add that you probably don't understand Thelema quite as well as you think you do, bud.

What do you think this philosophy is in a nutshell?

I'm just saying it was rather arrogant of him to try and be the founder and prophet of something that is universal within all humans.

Also, I don't think anyone fully understands Thelema. :P

I can understand how you'd feel that way with only a rudimentary understanding of how modern Thelema came about.

There were plenty of pre-Crowley Thelemites and plenty of Thelemites out there who have never even heard of Thelema. Crowley didn't want to be a "prophet" of the new aeon. This is spelled out in Liber CCXX and also part of the reason it took so many years after it was written to be shared with others.

And hubris is one of his better qualities. He was a shitty person, he was just a man, but occasionally he showed genius in his works.

I think you can excise Crowley from Thelema altogether as do a few other modern Thelemites. Or adopt the philosophy and re-brand it Morbidism if it makes you feel better about the whole thing.

No u

There's a lot of Christian nutters and conspiracy theorists out there that have called him worse but that claim is pretty baseless. A bisexual? A sexual libertine? A deviant? Sure.

I know that you're a Crowley scholar and all but I think you're mistaken in this particular case. The Christian nutters that attack him as a "Master Satanist" have some pretty amusing theories about the man though which are worthwhile just for a little light entertainment.

Crowley's diaries (and the diaries of some of his peers) are pretty open about what did happen in some of the stranger cases. Crowley's "Confessions" might be of interest to some here.
