It was awful, just sitting there on the side of my bed with my head in my hands, sobbing big slobbery tears. My dad's nasty, scary, stubbly old man's face all up in my face, screaming in his hoarse old man's voice "just pull yourself together for fuck's sake! What kind of a man are you? What kind of a man are you?" Slapping me with these feeble old-man slaps that just sent my tears and snot flying across the room.
My mom in the doorway with this worried look on her face just saying "Henry, stop it. Stop hitting the poor boy. Just you stop it now." She looked all gray and weary too. I could see the age on both of them, those old-people turkey necks, the deep lines in their sad faces. Voices thin and quavering. Yet somehow they are still stronger than me. How can this be?
After my dad's fury abated my mom came into my bedroom with a bowl of my "special soup" thats always been my favorite, and a few Xanax from her bottle. "Nevermind your father, you know how he gets. He just doesn't understand your artistic temperament. There, there. Drink your soup, have a good cry and let it all out." I just kept crying harder and harder and she just kept going "shhhh. There, there." Stroking the hair around my bald-spot.
Eventually the pills started working and I got sleepy. "Can I have a few more pills, mom?"
"Of course you can, my special boy. Shhhh. You've had a bad scare today, but your father means well. Just go to sleep and you'll feel better in the morning."
How can this be my life?
