When you say that they could steal my idea if I patent it, who is "they"? If I have a real idea, and submit it to the patent office (international), will the office itself steal my idea??

Sorry I did not detail how theft takes place WITH YOUR ASSISTANCE

Usually great ideas that go to the patent office, often take a long tyme to get to marketplace. So IF you publish your plans a long tyme before you are ready to get product or whatever to marketplace - Patent office publishes your Patent to the world and many can then look at work around or say hey this patent does not look all that valid but its a great idea so lets take it to market.

In other words tyming is everything. This is why the notebook is very important. The balance between releasing the patent to the world and having the product ready to roll about the same tyme prevents them Chinese from rolling out YOUR Gizmo before you even get the financing to get yours off the ground.

tl;dr?

Develop and finance or sell idea - With patent process almost finished about the same tyme. AND its not worth the cost of legal to go to patent unless you are sure you have something truly unique. Steve Jobs is/was not the best at keeping emotion out of the process. He said before he died he would run his company in2 the ground if necessary to protect wot he thought was unique. One of the great mistrakes he made. Of course the worst mistrake he made caused his death which was preventable and by his own admission - alternate medicine is not always the best way to remain alive.

Steve Jobs died of aids, not cancer. That's why he was trying alternative medicine.
