It isn't. Firstly, OP is correctly using the apostrophe here to substitute letters, not to show possession. And in any case, it isn't "grammatically incorrect to use an apostrophe for plurals". The girls' parents, for example. Or The dogs' house. Singular before the 's', plural after.

Wut? This is the part where you're no longer trolling, but you still fail. In neither of those examples was an apostrophe used to denote plurals. The s is used to denote plural just like in the nominative case, and the apostrophe is used to denote possession. The change is that the extra s has been dropped because you don't say "The girls's parents" or "The dogs's house" in speech.
