Both obesity and starvation are forms of malnutrition, and while obesity is not as quick to kill as starvation, it still has long-term effects like heart disease and diabetes. And I think the view of obesity as a disease is less insulting to the Africans than to pretend that it's something completely genetic, that you will forever be fat not because you eat too fucking much or are too lazy to do anything about it, but because your parents were fat and their parents were fat means you will always be obese, never mind the possibility that their idea of fat could be our definition of slightly overweight.

Pretty much. It's a suburban epidemic, where you are more likely to find cars than bicycles and supermarkets than gyms (except for Planet Fatness which is everywhere).
