My name is Leif and I'm 10 years old. I am in 5th grade. Some of my passions are geography, science, pokemon, and animals to name a few. I am a Weblos 2 in cub scouts. I used to play soccer. I play the clarinet and am in chorus in school.

I think it would be nice to meet other kids who are aspies. I'm not good at doing group work. Sometimes it's a little hard to make friends. Sometimes people call me names or give me a hard time because I move/walk a bit different or because of my interests.

I wonder if anyone else has to deal with the kind of things I have to deal with everyday. I wonder how others deal with things like this. It would mean a lot to me if I could make friends who understand me.

Hi everyone, I am Leif's mom - Now that he is a bit older I wanted him to be able to reach out to other kids who might understand him so he wouldn't feel so alone in this. I read through this site and I felt that this seemed to be a good place with a forum where he could make some connections and find some understanding that he deeply needs. Sadly, there aren't really many places online where he can find kids like himself and he doesn't know anyone IRL that has his diagnosis. It's very sad to post here and see most of the replies were implying he doesn't belong here either.

I don't think that seeing what's become of his thread here will give him that "belonging" feeling or "acceptance" I was hoping he would find.

Good luck to all of you - I will continue to search for other forums, such as Minichan, where he might be able to find kids like him around his age that would be willing to post with him and relate to him. If you know of any other forums, if you could add a post here pointing me in the right direction that would be very nice of you.

Thanks for the replies- As a side note, I wasn't planning to have my son "hang out" by himself on any forum. We've been using this idea of writing to others and expressing oneself in words as a team effort. For example, always say hi, if you are asked a question, answer it and follow it up with a question of your own to show that you are interested in what they have to say, etc etc etc. As a parent of a child, aspie or not, I don't think letting him use the internet without monitoring that would be wise. I think there is a difference between hanging out with a teenager in real life vrs. talking to them in posts/letters. A teenager would have more life experience to draw from and would be able to mentor, offer advice, and "I made it through, so will you!" understanding.

He did join Minichan and I'm not sure how that's going to go but at least I am trying to help him reach out. I am not sure how much current traffic they get there right now but there is a thread about pokemon so that it a good thing and a good start. I will always be wary and careful of who he is communicating with, what kind of information to leave out, and to always monitor what communication he recieves. I do understand the threats to kids online but I also understand that as a parent, I have a lot to do with protecting him from those threats.
