Do you just google something and save the thumbnail in the same place, overwriting the old file each time, never reusing anything? Isn't that was mobile phones often save pictures as the default filename or am I missing something?

I wouldn't know, I use a real phone for making calls. I just remember GiS thumbnails were always called "images.jpg" and captcha pics are always called "image.jpg"

Photos are automatically assigned a name by the digital camera. (If it's a real camera, and not a phone, at least.)

Yeah, I still have about 10k from my 7D. I did actually sort most of them (because autism).
My lumix and 4S assign them names and all but the sorting is a different issue because I might not upload them for some time and then they end up in a folder containing stuff from gummy bear torturing, naughty photos, and pictures of the cat/guns/satanic-rituals.
