Topic: Terms like 'Superman' reinforce gender imperialist stereotypes.

The new American film, "Man of Steel" has been released and though I have not given it much initial thought I am concerned about its gender emphasis.
What does the term "Superman" mean? What is the intent?
It would be easy to superficially assume that being a "man" is superior to people who are not classified as male or to those without gender. This automatically puts a film such as "Man of Steel" in conflict with a increasingly progressive society that rejects outdated gender-roles and the very notion of gender. We are an increasingly Bi, Gay and Transgender world. We would feel a greater connection with a "SuperPerson".
From what I have seen, "Man of Steel" has received tepid reviews and hopefully the film will not do well at the box-office. The concept of Superman is outdated does not have a place in society that strives for diversity and rejects war and nationalism.

It is a good movie. Zod is pretty bad ass too. The chick in the movie has powers like Superman. The movie has already made a lot of money.

Maybe so but not every person is a "man". Many of us do not have a gender so why transmit a message that a "man" is "super"?
Is physical strength all that is required to be "super"?
I hope not. We need intelligence and creativity more than strength.

Man represents the human species. He is called superman because he is superior to man.

The movie makes it clear that the special powers are not based on gender. Ironically enough the name is given to him by a female.

I had no interest in the film but I became aware of the gender emphasis the title and character and I am concerned about the implications.
I ask: What does the term "Superman" mean? What is the intent? Who decides this character is a "man" and why?
We live in an world that is becoming more diverse and less constrained by the concept of gender. The increase of the Bi, Gay, Transgender and non-gender population along with Gay Marriage confirms this with each passing day.
What the world needs is "Super People" and "Super Friends" not a fictional gendercentric worship of a character definded by physical strength. The concept of Superman is outdated does not have a place in society that strives for diversity and rejects war and nationalism.
Gender constrains us and it divides us. Go to any public place and you'll separate restroom facilities for "male" and "female". There is no useful reasoning for this and it only serves to create division and force people to define themselves into one gender.
This "film" just re-inforces all of the worst stereotypes we should be avoidiing.

No need to worry OP. Superman isn't being played by a red blooded American uber male, but by some Britfag most likely a member of the alphabet crew, LGBTXYZ.

It's just a silly little toy commercial for children. Upgrade to overseas contemporary drama.

Are you saying you wouldn't feel empowered as a woman, to be able to drop a nasty sloppy shit and then look a man in the eye as you walk out and he walks in? It's a feel good moment when someone comes reeling back out of the door with their nostrils and eyeballs burning.

If you find that disturbing what about those orange road signs in the states that say "MEN WORKING"? The patriarchy always wins.
