Topic: Thinking about starting a small business.

+finland !E.2uE3Aybc13.3 years ago #23,270

394379_145676262285734_250701248_n.jpgRepairing and upgrading computers. My area is an untapped market, and the only people who do the work here are circlejerking neckbeards with no social skills, all living and working out of a run-down downtown house in West Jasper. I'd be on the opulent side of Jasper (next to our lovely trailer park). any feedback or tips for starting a small business?

Storefront business's that are successful have one thing in common. Location Location Location.

#1 Consider changing location.

As a part-time independent PC technician, I think you should do it.

It's good money, albeit and infuriating experience.

@278,771 (B)
the trailer part is located directly next to the richest neighborhood, where I have a decent reputation. Having my name in the paper of that scholarship got me a few calls.

I have a lot of thoughts on the matter but I'll have to post them in a few.

Are you A+ certified already?

Certification would be expensive if he hasn't done it already through school, and it probably wouldn't make any difference to the clients in his area.

It isn't that expensive but I definitely wouldn't pay for a class for A+ training (that'd be a huge waste of time and money IMO). All he has to do is take the test and if he passes he'll be A+ certified.

This is all he really needs to prep for it anyway:
CBT Nuggets - CompTIA A+ Training Videos
http://thepiratebay.sx/torrent/5973323/CBT_Nuggets_-_CompTIA_ATraining_Videos_[2010]_-_[GuruFuel]

Getting Network+ certified isn't a bad idea either and he stands to make more because he'll be able to do more for small businesses in his area.

CBT Nuggets - CompTIA Network+ Videos - [2010][GuruFuel]
http://thepiratebay.sx/torrent/5943332/CBT_Nuggets_-_CompTIA_NetworkVideos_-_[2010][GuruFuel]

There's also some decent A+ practice tests online if you search around a bit.

He'll have to take the test at a PearsonVUE testing center (I had to go to same place when I got my CPhT) and after he's certified he will have to keep it active by doing CEs (Continuing Education credits) which is pretty standard w/ any certification.

Anyway the test costs $183.00 and odds are there is a testing center within a short drive of OP. It's a small price to pay in all reality and it looks great on a resume.

@OP

Get a day planner. Schedule what days you want to work. Charge a basic fee just for visiting someone and give them an estimate based on what needs to be done. Charge a premium for "emergency" calls or when someone tries to get you to work on a day you've decided to take off. Also charge a little extra for anyone not in say a 10 or 20 mile radius. Give breaks to nice clients and overcharge assholes.

Alternatively you can just give people estimates based on what they need done and not try and get too technical with how you charge people. It's really up to you and depends on what kind of clients you'll be dealing with. If you're dealing with trailer park denizens they won't have a lot of cash so you'll have to go easy on them but don't be afraid trade labor for goods either. They usually have inexpensive shotguns or pistols you can always trade labor for. :)

Make a clean minimalist business card and print off a 100 or so. Give these out to prospective clients whenever possible. Blow up the card and make a few flyers and put them in laundromats, coffee shops, bulletin boards, etc. Be friendly and personable. Don't be afraid to be proactive and contact small businesses in your area to see if they have a computer repair tech on retainer or not or if they're experiencing any problems. Find a site that reviews businesses and make a entry for your business and give yourself positive reviews from different proxies, but make them weeks apart, and vary your text "speech" a great deal. Oh and encourage real clients to leave you a review, or tell them you're trying to put yourself through school or saving up for something to better yourself and that if they know anyone that needs help you'd greatly appreciate them passing out your contact information or your card. Happy clients make the best advertisements.

When you greet a client for the first time, enter the room with a real smile, make eye contact (focus on their right eye), and shake their hand and allow your index finger to lightly touch the veins of their wrist. I'm not going to explain why you should do this but trust me, it will make a difference in how people view you. Also wear plain semi-professional clothes, slacks and a polo is a good choice. Stay well groomed, trim your finger nails, clean your shoes, wear light cologne. Don't be afraid to use jargon but don't try to embarrass or patronize your clients if you want repeat work.

Probably the most important bit of wisdom I can give you is never work for free. If your client is truly poor and you feel bad for them it's OK to do a little charity work but that's not how a business succeeds unless you can them to advertise for you.

Get intimately familiar with ATX and microATX cases since that's most of what you'll work on.

Laptops are more of a pain to work on because they're all a little different.

Anyway I could ramble more but that's enough for now. If I were you even though I would try to look like a legitimate business I would do everything under the table. Avoid using invoices, if someone asks for one simply say that you forgot it in your briefcase which you left at the "office" or some BS.

Also get into the habit of answering your mobile as your work phone unless you recognize the number, there's no sense in having two phones at this point. Also if you don't know how to do something, look it up, don't try to wing it. If a client is hovering explain that there's an unusual feature on whatever model PC you're working on or some BS. They have no idea what you're talking about anyway so use this to your advantage. I would prefer to pick up the PC you'll be working on and bring it back to my own work station anyway to avoid this but some minor repairs are simple enough that there is no need. Even though you probably won't be charging an hourly rate try to spend at least 15-30 minutes doing some "free" performance check-up or antivirus scan since most of what you'll need to do can be done fairly quickly. Resist the urge to place keyloggers on your clients computers. Although if you want you can power off their computer and when you need to log back on ask them for their password. Odds are they use the same password for their email, failbook, and lord knows what else.

Some of this advice isn't ethical and I'm not suggesting you follow it all to the letter I'm just telling you some of the things I've seen other people do. You can honestly be just as successful if not more so by doing things the right way, bud.

PS: It's also handy to get passwords to your client's WiFi. You never know when you'll be on the road and it's a lot easier than wardriving if you already have a few "hotspots".

What would you suggest in the way of protecting oneself against false accusations, such as "he entered my home and tried to rape me"?

I can so see that happening.

Don't worry about it. That'll never happen. But if you're really concerned carry a recording device and tape each house visit.

But again, that'll never happen. At worst you'll get negative feedback on your website or whatever. But allegations of rape by a customer in their home is not at all likely

@278,836 (FuckAlms !vX8K53rFBI)
Word. I only knew because I had looked into last year.

@278,865 (F)
lol... are you serious?

That would be highly unlikely and carrying a recording device on your person can run you into other legal complications. I know a few A+ techs that carry concealed firearms but I've never heard of anything like the scenario you mentioned. If you enter a dwelling and feel uncomfortable or have a bad gut feeling, simply make an excuse to leave, or lie and say you're feeling ill and will return later. Alternatively you can always take the computer to your "office, where you have more tools" if you're uncomfortable working at someone's house.

If you dress professionally, carry yourself professionally, act professionally, and have a clean record then that shouldn't even be a real concern. My advise is simply to leave if you get bad vibes.

Are you a hardcore introvert or something? I'm just having a hard time wrapping my mind around why this is a concern of yours. I mean of course there are always crazies out there but usually they'll have some sort of record (criminal or otherwise) attesting to that. You have the right to refuse any client service though as long as it's not on the basis of race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc. If you want to refuse a client service simply say you're too busy at the moment to take on their case and recommend they take it to the local BestBuy.

One more thing worth mentioning is that occasionally you'll find some unsettling stuff on people's personal computers. You have to use your own judgement here but if you find illegal material (like the kind Bert has on his PC) you should probably report it to the authorities. I know most people don't want to get involved but in these cases you might help to protect people from grievous harm.

If you find nude photos of your client in compromising positions (not uncommon) it is unethical to make copies of them (although it may come in handy in the future for blackmail). The missus used to work at a photolab and would occasionally get... interesting photos to develop but their policy was simply not to develop them unless they were pretty tame.

Damn. Anti gives out good info. I just skimmed it but it seems legit.

@OP
You can register your business online and set it up as a sole proprietorship so you just use your SSN as your tax ID number. You can either file your gross receipts monthly, quarterly, every 6 months, or once a year. Gross receipts tax is like sales tax. Then you just file your income tax returns for the state and feds every year like normal, except you have to do it all from your own books instead of having it all nicely there on a W-2. I highly recommend keeping records of every transaction in an Excel spreadsheet with the date of the work completed, your own invoice number (e.g. 20130001), and total amount charged. You should also buy a book of generic invoice papers. They have the duplicate shit on them so you have a copy when you give it to the customer. I'd recommend getting one of those little card readers so people can pay you that way. If you plan on doing it legitimately, and not under the table, then it's a lot easier to keep good books if you accept payment in check or electronic form instead of cash.

The last bit of advice I can give you is to pay your income tax quarterly, but overestimate it. That way when you file your yearly return you won't end up owing a fuckload of money and may even get a good chunk back.

Good luck <3

huh. I had always wondered what happened when people took embarrassing photos before the age of digital cameras.

> You have to use your own judgement here but if you find illegal material (like the kind Bert has on his PC) you should probably report it to the authorities
And this is why pedos get away with so much. You can't just tip the cops off and be done with it- you instantly become a material witness to the crime and if the cops find anything, you'll most likely have to appear in court. It's an inconvenience, and doing the right thing should never be inconvenient.

Your business, even if it's legit, won't be worth much. No lawyer would take their case unless they just have a lot of free time and disposable income. I think you're worrying over nothing bud. If you're really concerned though you can get a partner or an assistant and have them accompany you so you always have a witness and you're never left alone with a client. Although usually people tend to ignore IT types and let them do their thing. I don't think you have anything to worry about though, bud.

> I Trust No One

There's pros and cons to living that way.

@278,894 (H)
<3

It really just depends on how much business he ends up doing as to whether or not I think he should go legit. If it's a couple jobs a week, I would just pocket the cash and not declare the income. However let's be optimistic for a second and say since there aren't any other alternatives in the area he might do really well and have to hire out additional techs to handle the workload. In that case it becomes much more difficult to keep things under the table, you end up with more liabilities, but you stand to make much more in the long run.

Pills at this trailer park. Not a bad barter, pills are expensive. I could make more than they realize.

I'm going to start out doing it under the table, until I have some money saved in this enterprise to further follow it. I really don't want to get too serious with it until I'm out of college.
