Gif's inventor says ignore dictionaries and say 'Jif'
The creator of the Gif graphics format has said that his invention should be pronounced so it starts with a "j" rather than with a hard "g".

So, you mean "gif" as in "gift", right?

He's wrong.

Jraphics interchange format. Makes perfect sense.

Yes, but this was specifically in reference to Jif peanut butter and it's slogan. Which makes it trademark infringement.
And anyway, the PNG specification states the the extension is pronounced 'ping', however this is also ignored because you can't really imply any one vowel from the three given letters.
JPEG works because it actually stands for 'Joint Photographic Experts Group' and had to be shortened to meet DOS naming conventions which limit extensions to 3 characters.
tl;dr programmers have a tendency for poor spelling/grammar and are prone to typos and should not be defining matters of language and pronunciation in relation to the specifications they create.

Also, since when is this a new revelation? I've known it for years. The guy is just using his webby award appearance to bring attention to something that was otherwise not a big deal. Now it's just going to be another one of those annoying "did you know?" bits of trivia that casual users will use to try and impress people with their computer knowledge. The important thing is that gif is an obsolete format that is only useful for 16x16 favicons because of the lower initial overhead compared to png.
