It comes from the fact that dedicated apps are able to collect even more personal info which can be used to deliver more targeted content. At the same time, they can only be used to access the content of the platform that issues them and whatever 3rd party content gives them revenue directly. Sure, you can install apps for more than one content provider, but it's built on the premise that even the relatively minor inconvenience of opening another app may deter a small number of people from taking their eyeballs off the current app, and just clicking on another article instead. Print materials are generally anonymous beyond name/address and billing info. You can take your newspaper or magazine anywhere, read it whenever you want, as many times as you want, for as long as the material holds up. The publisher will never know how much use you get out of it, only whether you continue to subscribe or not. There's no way to alter the analog medium to facilitate such info gathering, so the print versions remain the same as they always have (unless they just get discontinued altogether in favor of digital). They will try to encourage you to use the online platform in their print media, though.

On a side note, I wget'd 1.5GB of deviantArt html pages last weekend. They compressed to 46MB.
