Superman to say after 58 'I do' years of dating Lois

NEW YORK - Talk about fear of commitment. After 58 years of playing coy, 58 years of endless dithering and denial, 58 years of dating the same woman, Superman is going to get married finally.

The lucky woman is Lois Lane, one of only four people in Metropolis to know the Man of Steel's super-secrets that he had a split personality, was not human and has come back once from the dead.

The wedding between Lane and Superman, who would be dressed up at the nuptials as his mild-mannered alter-ego Clark Kent, would take place in the Oct 9 issue of Superman Comics and three days earlier on the TV series, Lois And Clark, The New Adventures Of Superman.

They have been dating on and off since 1938, when the comic book began, and became engaged formally in 1990. It is now 1996 and they have been together 58 years but they still maintain separate apartments.

Mr Mike Carlin executive editor of DC Comics, said on Tuesday that they were getting married "because they decided it was the right thing to do. It just took them a while-about 60 years".

Mr Carlin, who oversaw the killing off of Superman in 1992 and his long complicated resurrection a year later, said the wedding would be "nice".

"Superman needs a break after all these years of fighting bad guys, stopping trains dying and coming back, saving the planet, etc," he said. But he cautioned: "That doesn't mean he is going to survive his honeymoon in Hawaii."

The plot team at DC Comics has not decided yet how the marriage would go - small things like whether the couple would have children or a set of china stamped with the letter "S".

Although the couple would have their share of toil and strife, sources said a divorce was out of the question. "They are not Charles and Diana. Anyone who believes in truth, justice and the American Way cannot get a divorce. a source close to the couple's drawing board said. - Reuter.
