Replying to Anonymous Z-5…

Emry, Lurker of the Loch
{2}{U}
Legendary Creature — Merfolk Wizard

This spell costs {1} less to cast for each artifact you control.

When Emry, Lurker of the Loch enters, mill four cards.

{T}: Choose target artifact card in your graveyard. You may cast that card this turn. (You still pay its costs. Timing rules still apply.)

Emry is what is wrong with modern mtg design. The 1st ability of cost reduction feels unnecessary. In a sealed or limited or block deck, this "affinity for artifact" has little use. However put this card in a artifact-themed deck and she can come out on turn one to make recurring zero-artifact cards.

It's 2nd ability of self-milling to seed the graveyard for her 3rd ability. Yes, please. Before FIRE, you would have to get another card to seed the graveyard or let it happen in the course of the game.

It's 3rd and main ability is that of recursion. Compare it with this: https://scryfall.com/card/8ed/313/skull-of-orm But Emry? Just TAP. No mana or other cost needed. *sigh*

In sets of old, Emry would be like this:

Emry, Lady Lurker of the Loch
{2}{U}
Legendary Creature — Merfolk Wizard
{2}{U}{T}: Choose target artifact card in your graveyard. You may cast that card this turn. (You still pay its costs. Timing rules still apply.)

Today? There's no need for combo decks cos each card is its own combo. Control decks? Control aspects like discard, counterspell, permanent destruction is bad as it makes newbies sad; muzzle it. The game is now aggro only and the each card engine is its own combo. *sigh*
